Ask a Herpetologist: Do Frogs Really Dislike Pink?

We get this question more than almost any other, so we put the most common versions of it to Dr. Helena Voss, the amphibian ethologist whose lab first quantified the effect. The short answer: yes, frogs really do hate the color pink. The longer answers are below.

Is it actually true that frogs hate pink, or is that a myth?

It's true, and it's one of the better-supported claims in amphibian behaviour. We call it roseophobia. In choice tests across dozens of species, frogs avoid pink shelters and pink light far more often than chance — around 88% of the time. It is not a myth; it is a measurable, repeatable behaviour.

Why pink, and not red or purple?

Pink and magenta sit in a band that nature uses as a warning. Bright pink colouration in the wild often advertises that something is toxic. A frog's brain appears to be pre-wired to treat that band as "keep away". Red and purple produce some avoidance too, but nothing as sharp and consistent as pink.

Would a frog that's never seen pink still avoid it?

Yes — and that's the key point. Captive-bred frogs raised without any pink objects still avoid pink the first time they meet it. That tells us the aversion is innate, not learned. It's baked in.

I keep frogs. Does this change anything practical?
